Three million people live in Spains capital Madrid.

The city is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Its glorious past and cultural attractions make it a tourist magnet for travelers from around the world.

Madrid is also known as cosmopolitan city, famous as a business location, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family.

Tourists also enjoy the citys active nightlife. Many clubs, bars and restaurants cheer the sophisticated visitor, and guarantee unforgettable experiences.

Madrid is located in a Mediterranean climate with cool winters and very hot summers. Some say the summer in Madrid is like being in hell. The cruel Spanish summer lasts 3 months.

The first documented mentions of Madrid dates back to the ninth century, when Spain was occupied by Muslim armies. The Muslims built a small palace on the site of todays Madrid. This was the beginning of the Madrids future success.

Madrid delights its visitor with a wealth of green spaces and parkland. There are also numerous museums and cultural attractions.

The city attracts many immigrants from around the world. Most of them come from Latin America (Ecuador, Colombia, Peru), Eastern Europe (Romania), Asia (China), North Africa (Morocco) and several West African countries.

Madrid is a top destination for people who are interested in art museums and galleries. Also classical music, operas, and literature study centers are a big passion of the Madrilenians. Visitors will find many of these institutions within the city’s vibrant center.

Shopping in Madrid is great fun and a true pleasure, if you know where to go and what you want.

There are a lot of small, specialized stores in the centre of the city, as well as busy food markets and big chain stores like in every other European city.

You need a lot of time and patience to explore all those stores in Madrid, because the number of shops is huge.

The photo shows the commercial walking street of Montera. This kind of pedestrian is travelled by thousands of people everyday.

Madrid Barajas International Airport is the most important airport serving the Spanish capital.

The airport was opened in 1928, and received its name from the adjacent town of Barajas, which has its own metro station on the same rail line serving the airport.

The special function of the airport can be found in the key link between Europe and Latin America. In 2007 the airport had more than 52 million passengers.

Madrid Airport is the 10th biggest airport in the world, and the fourth biggest in Europe.

Puerta del Sol Madrid

The Plaza Puerta del Sol is known as the heart of Madrid, and a good place to start the exploration of the city.

The square is also part of the historic center, and has the monument of King Carlos III on a horse.

Puerta del Sol is not a place to stay. The people of Madrid see it more as a meeting point, main crossing, and passageway place. Infact there is a bus terminal and loads of taxi stands.

But there is also something interesting at the Puerta del Sol. A very traditonal coffee house offers its service since 1894. Its name is “Cafe Mallorquina”.

In the south of the square impresses the building called “Casa de Correos” with its conspicuous looking clock tower. The clock strikes only one time in a year on New Year’s Eve. This special moment is broadcasted in all Spanish living rooms, and part of the celebrations in the whole country.

Bernabeu Madrid

Santiago Bernabéu is the home ground of the world famous football club “Real Madrid”.

The construction works started on the 27th October 1944 and were finished in 1947.

The football stadium has a capacity of 80.000.

The Complutense University of Madrid is known being the most prestigious, largest and important university of Spain. 10.000 staff members are working in the university. The number of students amounts almost 120.000. Following branches can be studied: Artes y Filosofía (Arts & Philosophy), Teología (Theology), Derecho Canónico (Canonical Laws), Letras (Liberal Arts) and Medicina (Medicine).

The centre of Madrid is full with historical sights and buildings. The traveller who arrives at the Barajas airport needs 12 km to go to the city centre of Madrid. A taxi is going to cost between 20 and 35 Euro.

Puerta del Sol is officially the geographical centre of Madrid, and also known as the heart of the city.

City & Sightseeing Tour Madrid

City and sightseeing tours through Madrid are offered by “Madrid Vision” in a double decker bus. The bus stop for the tour can be found in “Fuente Neptuno” directly next to the Prado.

The tour ticket can be bought in the bus. The sights and attractions on the tour are explained by an audio guide.

Those city & sightseeing tours are available from early morning until late in the night.
