Chamberi is a very nice and beautiful residential area in Spains capital Madrid. The district is known for its rich and wealthy citizens. Chamberi reminds a bit on the neighbour district Salamanca. One main difference can be found in the buildings. Those are not that fancy as in Salamanca.

Another difference between Salamanca and Chamberi is the folksy character of Chamberi. Salamanca is more class-conscious in this regard.

The attractions of Chamberi are “Plaza Chamberi” and “Plaza Olavide”. Especially Plaza Olavide is very active location during summer nights.

A good starting point for the exploration of Chamberi is the square called “Glorieta de Quevedo” directly next to the same-named metro station of line 2.

Metro 2: Quevedo

Salamanca is known as a quite fancy residential district of Madrid. Living is quite expensive there. Palaces and noble town houses characterize the outward appearance of the district.

The night life is not very active in Salamanca. Its citizens prefer and cosy and calm atmosphere.

Tourist should visit Salamanca if there is an interest for fancy, exclusive, and expensive shops. Those shops are located in Calle Serrano.

If you like partying and a lot of crazy people, Salamanca might not be the right holiday destination for you.

Lavapies is Madrids district with the highest percentage of foreigners. The population of Lavapies has more than 40% foreigners, and possesses a high attraction for the alternative society.

Most of the immigrants come from Latin America, but also the amount of people from North and sub-Saharan Africa is still increasing. The area around “Calle del Meson de Paredes” is the home of Chinese wholesalers. Simple tourists are not able to buy there. Those Chinese only sell to resellers.

Calle de Argumosa is the street of bars, pubs, and restaurants. This area is not that international as the rest of Lavapies. Those bars, pubs and restaurants have still kept their Spanish character.

The Western part of Lavapies is known as the poor side of the district. Maybe the flea market on Sundays around the Calle Embajadores and Plaza Cascorro could be an interesting experience in this area. “Rastro” is the name of Madrids flea market in Lavapies.

The complete opposite can be found in the east of Lavapies. This is the rich part of the district. The visitor is able to find the museum of modern art with Picassos famous masterpiece “Guernica”, as well as the impressive railway station called “Atocha” with its tropical entrance hall.

The past of Malasana was not a glory one. It was the home of Madrids gangland.

The character of the district changed completely after a complete restoration of its buildings and streets in 1994.

Malasana was the name of a young girl who fought against Napoleons French invaders in 1808. The whole district is dedicated to her.

Today Malasana is a popular place and well known for an active nightlife. Especially very young inhabitants of Madrid enjoy to spend and celebrate their nights here. Also the numbers of restaurants and shops are increasing, and guarantee some bustle during the day as well.

It’s told that the place is like a magnet for creative young people with ideas, who want to do something extraordinary.

Chueca is the district of the gays and lesbians in Madrid. They arrived in the middle of the 80′s, and replaced the junkies from this old town district. The arrival of homoxsexual in Chueca stopped the decline of this part in the center of the Spanish capital, is written in a book about Madrid.

Empty flats and apartments are history in Chueca, and the price per square metre is still increasing. It’s told that 20 percent of Chuecas inhabitants are homosexual, and half of the shops, restaurants, and bars only advertise and orientate for homosexual clients.

“Calle Fuencarral” is one Madrids most fanciest shopping street, and also located in Chueca. Some years ago the area was dangerous and full of junkies. Today this part of Chueca profited from the sensational economic recovery as well.

Madrid de los Austrias is the inofficial name of the district “La Latina”. The inofficial name comes from the reign of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty in Spain between the 16th and the beginning of the 18th century.

Madrid de los Austrias is the location of the kings palace. The alleys around “Calle Segovia” in the South Eastern part of the district spread a certain kind of charme in a very impressing way. This area is also very popular among Madrids nighthawks.

The last traces of Madrid during the Middle Ages can be found only here in Madrid de los Austrias / La Latina.

Puerta del Sol is the heart and center of Madrid and its road network. The square is the end and the starting point of many shopping streets, and located quite close to the impressing Plaza de Mayor.

Huertas is the famous nightlife district of Madrid, and can be found in the South Eastern direction from Puerta del Sol. “Plaza Santa Ana” is the first destination for the eager Huerta visitors. The place is surrounded by cosy bars, pubs, and little restaurants. One of the most famous attractions of “Plaza Santa Ana” is the “Cerveceria Alemana”, which exists since 1904. Cerveceria Alemana was founded by a bunch of German guys.

The square was remodeled in 2003. Cars are allowed to pass by, but parking is only allowed in the new underground carpark.

On the Western part of Plaza Santa Ana stands an interesting sculpture of the bullfighter and matador “Pedro Calderon de la Barca”. The sculpture is located directly infront of a former traditonal hotel for the bullfighters. The Spanish Theatre “Teatro Espanol” can be found in the opposite of Pedro Calderon de la Barcas monument.

The district of Huertas has even a second name. Some inhabitants call this lovely piece of Madrid also “Barrio de las Letras”. Barrio de las Letras means “District of words” in the English language, and this reveals the past of the place as home for poets and writers since the 17th century. Some of their quotes can be found in the pavement of the pedestrian zone called “Calle de las Huertas”.

Huertas is located very close to the one of the worlds most famous and greatest museum called “Prado”.
