Category: Madrid Buildings – admin – 8:14 am

Palacio Real was planned and designed by architects from Italy in the middle of the 18th century. The purpose was to build a new palace for the king and his retainers. The assignment was given by Philipp V.

Palacio Real has seven floors and looks quite opulent in typical baroque style. The whole floorspace is impressing: 100.000 square metres. Location of the palace is the district called “Madrid De Los Austrias / La Latina”.

A walk through the precious palace is a true journey into a different world. Luxury is everywhere and the visitor is going to be slayed by the massive amount of blissful impressions.

The construction works started in 1734 and were finished in 1764. The first king in the palace was Charles III. Palacio Real stayed the residence of the Imperial family of Spain until the end of the monarchy in 1931.

The Spanish king of today, Juan Carlos, who is in exalted position since 1975, has found another palace to live outside of the city. He lives in the palace called “Zarzuela”. He only uses Palacio Real for very special events like visits of important guests and weddings of his family.
