Chueca is the district of the gays and lesbians in Madrid. They arrived in the middle of the 80’s, and replaced the junkies from this old town district. The arrival of homoxsexual in Chueca stopped the decline of this part in the center of the Spanish capital, is written in a book about Madrid.
Empty flats and apartments are history in Chueca, and the price per square metre is still increasing. It’s told that 20 percent of Chuecas inhabitants are homosexual, and half of the shops, restaurants, and bars only advertise and orientate for homosexual clients.
“Calle Fuencarral” is one Madrids most fanciest shopping street, and also located in Chueca. Some years ago the area was dangerous and full of junkies. Today this part of Chueca profited from the sensational economic recovery as well.
